Costco Field Trip!
We started at the Customer Service Desk, and headed to the Tire Center, then thru the main entrance to the Photo Center then the Optical Center. We stopped in at each department to learn a little about how it is run. Mr. Keith explained how Costco stores, tracks and displays their merchandise, and how employees maintain the appearance of the warehouse.
We continued through warehouse to the back of the store where the Bakery is located. Mr. Keith explained how much the bakery department produces every day. We even got to sample free cookies while here.
On to the Meat department to meet the butchers and then to the Produce department. All of the employees would greet our troop as we visited their department.
We explored the back dock where the trucks deliver the goods from the depot to the warehouse. We watched an employee demonstrate the forklift and how it is used to move and store the merchandise.
We continued the tour through the food sections of the store and went to visit the Pharmacy and Hearing departments. From there we went through the Employee Lounge and management offices. Mr. Keith then gave each of the kids a free backpack they could use in school.
We finished our tour at the Food Court, and were treated to complimentary pizza, lemonade and churros for our group.
Such an awesome field trip! We will use some of what we learned today about different jobs for the Barbie I Can Be badge.

Valentine / World Thinking Day
We had our meeting to celebrate Valentine's and recognize World Thinking Day this month. The girls created Valentine critters to send to two troops. We are exchanging care packages with Troop 5029 in San Diego, California, and with Troop 344 in McDonald, Ohio.
The girls each completed an About Me page for the Daisy troop in California.
We packed up the notes, a letter about our troop, the critters and some goodies for our Girl Scout friends. We then got to open the care packages we've received from them. The girls were so excited to open the packages and read about their GS friends across the country.

Another Snow Day!
We did get our cookie order in. Since this is our first year for all the girls to sell cookies, and our troop is relatively small, we had a troop goal to sell 100 boxes. We actually sold 372 cookies! Our troop did really well and greatly exceed their goal. Congrats to our girls! They will vote later on what they would like to do with a portion of their proceeds.

Holiday Party & Count It Up! Leaf
The first part of our meeting was decorating holiday cookies. They had lots of fun decorating and eating!!
All sugared up!
We got to work on our Count It Up Leaf. Our Cookie Sales season is starting and this will be our first year for us to sell cookies. Our council is a Super-Six Council with cookies this season - that means we are only selling the top six types of GS cookies.

We then practiced selling cookies by role-playing. The girls would take turns knocking on a closed door and practice selling cookies to Michelle when she opened it.

Would you like to buy some Girl Scout cookies? |
Some of the girls even pretended to be kids at a house who would help their mom choose cookies to buy!

Which cookies are your favorite? |
We then decided on a goal for our upcoming cookie sales. Since we've never sold cookies before, and know that some girls may sell much more than others, we came up with a troop sales goal of 100 boxes. We used a copy of an example goal chart from a page in the GS Daisy Guide.
The girls then went home with their second financial literacy petal, Count It UP!

Investiture, Rededication & Money Counts
I have a copy of an older GS Ceremonies booklet from the Girl Scouts Delaware-Raritan, and pulled from there to create today's ceremony.
We followed the the first two activities outlined in the Daisy GS Guide. We laid out different coins and discussed their value and how they equate to paper denominations. The girls also received a Money Worksheet, found from Troop 500.
The last activity was assigned as homework for the girls. The task was to determine how much things cost.

Budget Cards worksheet given as homework. |
The girls were given Budget Cards (also found from troop Troop 500) worksheets to take home. Their assignment was to price out the cost of a few activities that we could do as a troop with the cookie money we will be earning. Their parents would assist them with this.
The girls went home with their first leaf petal for the front of their vest!

Food Drive for our Community
Notices for this collection were distributed to our neighbors last week. (Click here for a Word doc version).
The girls pulled two wagons up and down our street and collected 77 pounds of food from our neighbors. That is a few pounds more than our collection last year.
All done! |
The food was delivered to Loudoun Interfaith Relief to help those in need here in Loudoun County.
