Holiday Meeting

Our meeting today was relaxed and fun for the holidays.

We had a little food - something salty, something sweet, something healthy to eat.  Tortilla chips, cookies and grapes.

For a craft, the girls made wreath photo-ornaments for their family.

We passed out the cookie sale info to the parents too.  Being our first year as Daisy Girl Scouts, selling cookies will be optional.  The girls are welcome to sell some boxes to friends and family if they are interested, but no pressure.

Happy Holidays!

Courageous and Strong

For December, our troop participated in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program supported by the American Red Cross.  The girls made holiday greeting cards for our Military and wrote words of thanks for their service to our country.

Holiday greeting cards for our military.

This activity tied into our Courageous and Strong patch for today.  We talked about who we think of when we think of men and women who are courageous and strong.  People in our military serve as one easy example.  We also discussed how being courageous also means getting past your fear to try something new.

We did a couple of fun activities to see if we could be courageous.  The first game was called emotions.  The girls pick out of a paper bag a piece of paper that had an emotion on it, like Happy, Sad, Mad, Glad, Excited, Hurt, Surprised, etc...  Each girl had to stand in front of the group to act out the emotion without talking. It could take quite a bit of courage to do this in front of everyone.

The second game we played was a fun one to see "Who has enough courage to put their hand inside a container if they don't know what's inside?"    For this activity, each girl was given a brown paper bag that was bunched up closed at the top with a narrow opening (held by a rubber band).  They couldn't see what was in it, but we asked if anyone was Brave enough to put their hand inside.  They were all a bit nervous, but they were very brave and stuck their hand in.  They were so surprised to feel something slimy, and discover that it was a cup of open pudding that they stuck their hand into!   Of course, the next question they asked was "Can we eat it?"  Of course.

Enjoying their courageous efforts.   :-)

We closed out our meeting with a gingerbread/snowman foam bead necklace craft for each girl to make.

The girls took home their red petal patch for being Courageous and Strong!

Food Drive for Considerate & Caring

For this Thanksgiving time of year, our troop went door to door on our neighborhood street to collect food for the needy.  At our last meeting, the girls signed a food drive notice.  We made copies and brought them to the neighbors.

Today, the girls pulled their wagon and collected 74 pounds of food!  The food was delivered to Loudoun Interfaith Relief to help those in need in Loudoun County.

The girls earned their light green petal patch for their work for being considerate and caring to others.

Juliette Low Video on NickJr

While dining last night at one of our kids' favorites, CiCi's Pizza, my girls pointed out this video that was playing on tv about Juliette Gordon Low, our Girl Scout founder.  It is a very cute short 1-minute video on how she started our organization.  Click here to Check it out, or click on the picture below.

Pinecones & Respect Myself & Others

Our troop had a fun meeting today.  We started with snack and coloring their own pumpkin pages.  The girls have some creative designs.

We talked about Girl Scout Founder Juliette Low, and how she loved to watch birds.  In honor of  her birthday this month, we made our own pinecone bird-feeders.  The girls first covered their pinecones in peanut butter, then rolled them in bird seed.  A piece of string was tied to the top of the pinecone so it could be hung from a tree branch.

We discussed Respecting Myself and Others today to earn our purple Daisy petal.  We read the story I'm Gonna Like Me by Jamie Lee Curtis, and talked about ways that we show respect for ourself and for other people we meet and know.

The girls then made paper doll friends to demonstrate respect for others.  Some friends looked like us, others looked different, and some had special needs.  They all needed to be dressed and taken care of, so the girls took care of all of them by getting them dressed and looking good!

Our friend Courtney has moved to a new school, and will be unable to stay with our troop this year.  We wish her the best at her new school.  A couple other friends in our troop were not able to attend today's meeting, but will be back next time.  One was sick, and the other had a conflict with a prior commitment.  I will put together a packet of what we did so that they can complete the activities at home to earn their petal.
